JEPROX: THE MUSICALE

Just when you thought musical theater has seen its heyday of band music themed productions, Tanghalang Una Obra and Hammock Productions presents a rollicking play set to the tune of Mike Hanopol's music.

Now, if you think it's all ear-drum poppin' "wreck-and-roll" music you'll have to rest easy and appreciate an updated version of  Pinoy Rock and Roll given a new Gen Alpha vibe. Jed Balsamo invigorates Hanopol's hits with lots of counter-point, harmonies, and powerful solos optimizing the stars' and chorus' voices. David Ezra, Nino Alejandro, and Jeffrey Hidalgo alongside Jet Pangan, Geneva Cruz and Sheila Ferrer deliver live performances worthy of their stellar status.

Palanca award-wining Nick Pichay has written yet another memorable story set in the turbulent (if fashion- forward) decade of the 70s tracing a young man's (Miko/David Ezra) obsession with a career in music, defying his father's wishes ,  falling in love with (Paz/Sheila) and in the end letting past hurts with his father slide. Its his journey that gives substance to the story, yet his pals offer a heart-warming, comedic support that the audience find really amusing. Geneva Cruz as Miko's muse and Sheila Ferrer as his ill-fated love interest are the perfect  foils to Ezra's soaring vocals. Jet Pangan holds his own as Paking sings the title song and brings the house down as well. Nino Alejandro (Paulo) and Jeffrey Hidalgo(Willy)... what more can I say? Their artistry is at par with everybody else's. They're funny, irreverent and musically gifted. And lastly, the ensemble who sing their hearts out with quick changes that happen in a snap of a finger. Some even manage to shine in their respective scenes.

I'd love to include my observations more extensively, but I'm afraid I might spoil it for the rest who already have tickets... Suffice it to say, Frannie Zamora's direction is fast-paced and entertaining and replete with warmth and humor. For those who haven't purchased tickets,  come and watch Jeprox the Musicale at the GSIS Theater, Pasay City. Show runs 20-30 November at 7:30pm. Enjoy the show!!!¹
